How camp changed her summer
How camp changed her summer
The first time someone really listened
A 17-year-old finds her voice — and ends up mentoring three new campers the following summer.
“I came for a free lunch. I stayed because, for the first time, somebody actually wanted me to come back.”
On her second day at The Champs Camp, Kamilah sat alone at a picnic table, sure she would leave by sundown. A counselor named Aisha sat down without a word, and after a long minute said, 'I'm glad you came back today.' Kamilah laughed and cried at the same time. She came back the next day. And the next summer. This year, she's mentoring three new campers — and writing this story.
